Close attention to focus is required when the camera and/or the subject is mobile. The speed of movement dramatically affects the impression and can add resonance to a shot.Barnwell, Jane. The Fundamentals of Film-Making. P.74
This quote is relevant in terms of the shots in My Name Is John because there are significant amount of mobile shots as the film being a mockumentary follows the main character of John throughout by going to every location he goes to.
One particular shot that comes to mind in the film is when the Julie his wife is getting interviewed when John comes into the kitchen creating a racket and she gets mad and goes into the kitchen to shout at him. When she gets up the shot makes it believe the camera is taken off the tripod and moves into the kitchen to focus on the two as Julie tells John off and show what he has been doing.
These movements have a significant effect on the relationship between the subject and the camera.Barnwell, Jane. The Fundamentals of Film-Making. P.74
With the film being a mockumentary, when needed some of the characters can look directly at the camera especially to places that he goes to such as a shop where they wouldn't expect to see a film crew going around following someone.
Also because John is the main focus of the mockumentary the camera has to follow him but also get insight into his life through other characters who are interviewed by the crew separately.
