One of the ways to become a camera operator is to start from the bottom of the ladder as a runner and work your way up to camera operator, some of the jobs you could do before being a camera operator is jobs such as a clapper loader, focus puller or grip. A clapper loader loads and unloads the film into the camera, a focus puller will determine the focus of the camera and finally a grip will build some of the equipment for a shoot. Another way to help become a camera operator is have the correct skills for the job such as team-working, patience and attention to detail.

For a future role a camera operator can move up to is a DOP or Cinematographer. A DOP is responsible for the style of the film they are working on with the help of the director, crew and lighting designers. Before film the director and DOP will go to the locations for the film and see how the lighting potential, then the DOP will test the equipment such as cameras and lenses and see what their effects are. Then when shooting they will help and supervise with the camera and lighting crews.
