Derek Vanlint
About
In his career he mostly worked on commercials for various companies including Pepsi and British Airways. In 1979 his work on Ridley Scott's Alien he received a nomination for a BSC Award for Best Cinematography. He only worked on a few films after only doing more commercials in his homeland of Canada.
Notable Films
Alien - 1979
Dragonslayer - 1981
The Spreading Ground - 2000
Influences
His work on Alien influenced me because of the way he was able to use one main setting and location being the ship Nostromo/LV-426 to create a caustrophobic environment where none of the characters could get away and the Alien could hide away sneaking up to each crew member. This was helped by the dark lighting camera choices which hid the Alien from view and when you did see it something bad would happen.
