Now, although My Name Is John is a mockumentary and not a documentary meaning their are varying differences between the two, there still is some important similarities that are important to use in terms of the camera.
Filling the screen
One such example from the film is the interview of John's wife Julie. We decided to go for a in focus shot of Julie while the kitchen is out of focus and when John comes back and Julie eventually goes into the kitchen the shot pull focuses to both of them.
We did this because while during the interview you can see John is up to something and Julie becomes suspicious and she goes to find out what he is doing after he lied about what he was doing.
Rule Of Thirds
In that same shot of the interview we have Julie positioned on the far right of the screen so she is on one of the horizontal lines while John is on the other side which was done to add to the visual of the scene.
Cutaways
We also have a particular cutaway of a calendar with a performing act while Julie is talking about working together with their marriage and this adds context to it.
Filling the screen
If, for example, you are filming an interview with someone who is talking about their experience of divorce, and they become visibly upset, you need to make a choice of whether you want to use a "long shot", in which the subject might appear quite far away, or whether you want to zoom in on the action, and have a "close-up shot".Glynne A, Documentaries... and how to make them. Rule Of Thirds
The Rule of Thirds states that an image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. The four points formed by the intersection of these lines can be used to align features in your shot.Glynne A, Documentaries... and how to make them. P.137

Cutaways
Although they can be used generally to add meaning and depth to the narrative, Rather than see an interviewee talk solidly, uninterrupted for five minutes, it's often helpful to have visual sequences that help add another layer to the film, and take the attention away from just "talking heads".Glynne A, Documentaries... and how to make them.
