Study Skills
Week 1
Academic referencing was the focus of the session. Since I have not done many essay's or reports this was new to me and will become important for future assignments. Some of the main points I gained was on "Figures" which are images which need to be separate to a bibliography known as a figure listing, also long quotes need to placed on a separate line and indented, although short quotes can be placed within a separate piece of text but need a footnote. In a bibliography sources a placed in a certain order: author, date, title, publisher. Internet sources need to ave the date you accessed it but 10% of our sources must be internet sources 10 books = 1 internet source. I think this isn't a great idea because some internet sources can be just as useful as books. Finally if you find something in a book the source needs to be "p.p. 50-55".
In this lesson we learned all about Academic Research. Known as Investigation to find out the facts and opinions on a chosen subject.
Some of the different types of research techniques we have to use are:

Week 2
Some of the different types of research techniques we have to use are:
- books/eBooks
- Journals/ Magazines
- Websites - under 10%
Some other techniques are
- Interviews
- Surveys
- Questionnaires
- Audio/Video
- Lecture Notes
It is important to refer to the sources you have used using quotes using short and long quotes. Short quotes can be placed in sentences while you have to indent long quotes.
Primary Research is going out and finding the research yourself by using sources such as surveys and questionnaires. It is important to ask people you have used in your primary research to use what you have gathered off them and then you can form your own ideas..
It is important to find relevant examples to support your arguments but also find other opinions, creatives and theorists that agree and disagree with the points you are making. One thing to avoid when doing research is not to copy down everything rd for word.
It is a very good idea to structure your research so synthesis is easier. Synthesis is a term which means you look any piece of work and use the best notes and take out the ones that might not elate to your chosen subject.
