Introduction To Film Making
Week 1
In the first session of the day which was intro to film making, we learned about Narrative Structure. Some of the main points from the lesson were that a story is a series of events whereas the plot is the order of events. One other important term was diagesis which is the world that a film creates e.g. setting, characters etc.We found out that the motivations for the characters in a film are important for a film's narrative. Cause and effect caused by the characters drive a narrative forward as well.
In the afternoon for Mike's lesson there were various observation tasks we did such as looking at a table with many items then after going out of the room and going back in we had to see if anything had changed. Another task we did was called The Alphabet Game where we had to film different letters of the alphabet. Each group had a certain number of letters to film.
Week 2
For the morning session with Diane we created our own story's using "story grids". Each grid had it's own section: Person, Place and Situation. By randomly selecting coordinates we would then have to write a short synopsis of a story. When I randomly chose my coordinates my story had to be written about a child, a windmill and amnesia. When I chose my coordinates my story had to be about a sniper, the future and a trap. I personally found it easier to write a story by choosing my own coordinates.
Afterwards we looked at genre and mise-en-scene. When cinema was old there where only two genres to chose from: Drama or Documentary. From drama came melodrama and with the help of sound being developed the musical was introduced. Each genre of cinema depends on many factors such as social, cultural and economic factors. When it comes to genre audience viewers want to see new ideas but also something that feels familiar to them. Mise-en-scene will act as a foreplay which is the real pleasure of a narrative in question but it should never take itself seriously unless it is a parody.
Week 3
In this session for our warm up task we had think of 10 different sentences about ourselves starting with "I am...". Afterwards we had to think of 5 different sentences starting with "You are...." to the person on our left.
We then created our own story grids and filled our own one in. The group I was in had the focus on Horror/Thriller/Psychological genres. We each created our own stories until we fund one that worked. One f the best stories that came from this exercise was from Action/War genres which was aliens invading and taking over chefs and poison the food and the humans end up fighting back.
In Mike's session we looked at some roles in he film industry using this website:

After that we filmed a short narrative but using 7 different shots and torch had to be in at least 3 of them. In our attempt to pull it off we ended up running out of time. Some of the shots we managed to film were close up, mid shot, and wide shot. We did end up having good framing but the first shot ended being too dark even though the was a torch being used,
Week 4
For the morning session we planned story-lines for each genre we could get for the 24 hour film challenge that was coming up. The genres being:

- Sci-Fi
- Western
- Musical
- Rom-Com
The potential genre I was hoping for was sci-fi or western.
In the afternoon for Mike's session we looked at scripts and how to turn them into a shot list which I fund interesting since I've never done one before. Afterwards we did a budget challenge where we had to g out ti the shops in Hartlepool and find props for under a pound. We actually managed to buy a lot of props including toy guns, a pipe, a dagger and even fake blood
